Designed by Mark Browning from Cycas Landscape Design in 2009, the gardens at 29 Redmond Street, Kew were completed earlier this year by Kiama Landscapes and are currently maintained by Urban Horticultural Solutions.

The site is 1500 square metres with a western orientation over looking the Yarra River with views to the Melbourne CBD to the south west and Macedon Ranges to the north west. The garden "plays" with the sloping site and positions the three level dwelling appropriately into the landscape. Essentially the landscape consists of three separate areas: the front garden, the entry court, and the rear garden.

In the front garden, Lemon Scented Gums and Brachychitons were selected for their upper storey appeal whilst the under storey plantings included a mix of both native and exotic grasses, tussocks and shrubs. Basalt field boulders were used for embankment control and curved corten steel walls provide for the serious retaining required towards the bottom of the drive.

The entry court is a private garden located behind a black steel cage separating the drive and carparking area from the house itself. Here an oriental inspired garden features large boulders and a sea of grey cricket ball size pebbles. Plantings include Japanese Pachysandra and Black Mondo Grass beneath a copse of Silver Princess Gums, Dichondra surrounds the random Sawn Bluestone steppers that lead around to the rear garden.

The rear garden features a pool and spa fully tiled in black with Sawn Bluestone coping. To contend with the topography of the area, the spa is located 900mm above the level of the pool. Abutting the spa is a casual decked landing of Spotted Gum with built in seating. Recycled timber steps lead to the pool area which consists of a large expanse of random Sawn Bluestone paving. As the pool is set 760mm above the pavement, Sawn Bluestone steps lead to the swimout zone in the pool, whilst a 6.5metre floating shelf of Sawn Bluestone cantilevered off the pool edge extends from the steps to a large Spotted Gum day bed. Feature plantings in the rear garden include Dragon Blood Trees and Chinese Elms. A glass pool compliant fence on the rear boundary allows the beautiful adjacent borrowed landscape to permeate the rear garden.
